New Mix from Leon Windsor

Ahead of our little road trip this Friday, COR’s mixing boy has whipped up a quick and tasty balearic mix for us.

Aptly named the Sundown Mix, this is a quality selection of Leon’s balearic faves. Leon calls it ‘A one-take wonder; a selection of tunes that take you from day into night.’

Cheers Leon, lovely lil mix sir!

COR Brighton Rave Crawl

Hello COR part contingent, hope all is good!

This Friday, 10th June 2011, the COR fam is hitting the road and heading down the coast to Brighton!

The COR DJ’s have been kindly invited by Pablo Contraband to play at the his wonderful Disco Deviant party at Above Audio! And very excited we are.

The party starts at 10pm,

we’re on at 12:30am

and it goes on til 3am.

Best part is IT’S FREE!

We will be one on, one off in a typical last-hour-of-a-COR-party stylee, so expect a rapid fire journey though our diverse collection of  disco, house and balearia party straters. Looking forward to this bigtime!

All the details can be found here.

So what this rave crawl all about then, I hear you cry??!

Well, it just so happens that on the same night, Brighton disco heroes GO BANG! are holding one of their now infamous underground warehouse parties, in the warehouse space underneath Brighton train station.

This too is free to get in, and it goes on until after 5am! And as if that weren’t brilliant enough, they have an  AMAZING special guess playing! Proper top drawer, premium booking!!

Certainly one not to miss, and we plan not to!! Once we have finished at Above Audio, we will be making a prompt bee line for the GO BANG! warehouse party.

And we want you to come with us!

The COR DJs are planning to get the train up to Brighton around 7pm, have a drink or two around Brighton, then head to Above Audio around 10pm.

After that we’ll be heading to the GO BANG! warehouse party. The train back to Pompey starts at 5am, so after we’ve had ‘one more’ on the GO BANG! DF we’ll be heading upstairs to get the train home.

The more the merrier, so if anyone fancies a cracking night out in Brighton, please feel free to come come along with us!!

That’s about it for now. Very excited about our lil Brighton smash up this weekend. Hope you can make it along!

Big Love.

The COR Fam.

A New Year Message From Al Kent!…

Here at COR tower we’re big fans of disco ledge AL KENT. So we were very pleased when he agreed to contribe to our lil ol’ COR blog.

So here’s the first installment from the man himself. Hope you enjoy.

Expect to see more from Al on the COR blog over the coming year….

——————————————————————————

AL KENT’S DISCO RAMBLINGS

Top five best things about 2010:

1. Dimitri’s Philly comp.. by a mile
2. Walter Gibbons comp on Strut
3. Alice Echol’s disco book
4. Rahaan DJing in Glasgow’s Big Joint
5. Disco Love on vinyl!

OK, let’s get the shameless self promotion out of the way first…

I’m currently putting together a handful of albums for BBE,  have a new vinyl edits EP on stilove4music (Al Kent “Disco Crazy” – from all good record shops), have four EPs out on Million Dollar Disco, all still available (First Floor EP, Lower East EP, Music Machine EP, Other Side EP), and another two about to go to press, remixes of Katzuma and Clone Records in the pipeline.

But the biggest news ever is our new monthly party.. Rahaan, everybody’s favourite disco jock from Chicago is our resident alongside me. We’re a bit excited.

Street Soul Records

A few years ago Andy Davies kindly sent me a copy of a CD he’d put out, Jerline & Friends “Best of Friends”, which he’d licensed after owning (and loving) a mysterious unissued acetate of the album since the 1970s. I fell in love with it too.

A while later he sent me a 45 (Patrick Henry), and another (Last Flight). And they just kept coming. Turns out what I thought was nothing more than a hobby for Andy is actually now his full time thing.

Giving up a job to run a vinyl only record label in these digital loving times shows he’s passionate about this music (as if we didn’t know that already) and that passion shows on the quality of every single record he puts out.

For the disco purists, “It’s A New Day” by Pulse (SSR5-B) and Jerline‘s version of “Get It Off My Conscience” (SSR6-B) are sure to please.

BBE Records

BBE Records are pushing disco big time this year with comps coming from the likes of Tom Moulton, John Morales, Johnny D, Zaf, Nick The Record and the Peabodies. And me.

Disco Love part Two is already underway as is a Best of Disco Demands. And for those who’ve been asking, the New Million Dollar Orchestra album is also slowly becoming a reality.

Joey Negro

Joey Negro‘s just put together the third in his Soul Of Disco series, this time going it alone without Sean P. Due to drop at the end of February, you can get a taster here:

Z Records

Also on Z is a compilation from London’s as yet unheralded Red Greg. Due to drop in May, I for one am very keen to check the tracklist. Ebonite, the party Red Greg runs with Louis Heel is set to move to Paris very soon. Check these mixe for an idea of what you can expect:

Vintage Audiodelica

There can’t be many places where you can buy a vintage Bozak mixer for less than a pair of Levi’s. But you can at LN-CC. Unfortunately the Levi’s in question cost three grand! But LN-CC looks like a great place – records, vintage bozaks and a fully kitted out music room. Who could ask for more?

The Internet

A couple of things have caught my eye online recently…

Theo Parrish tearing into laptop DJs is nice…

Theo Parrish Laptop Rant

…as is the crazy looking guy from Funktion One talking audio…

My favourite thing this month though is the dancing Andy Gibb doll currently on ebay…

1979 Disco Star Andy Gibb Doll by Ideal in Box!

…I’m still looking out for a Walter Gibbons one!

——————————————————————————

Thanks for that Mr Kent, muchly apprecaited sir. Looking forward to the next installment.

If wanna find out more about what Al is up to, hop on over to his wonderful website for release news, tickets and mixes.

Enjoy!

Big Love.

Like COR Music? Listen to COR DJs

love a crowd

The COR parties, after just the two and a half years of kicking out quality underground disco knees ups are now a bit of a Southsea fave.

But the COR parties themselves only happen every once in a while. Boo.

michealThe COR parties are all about the drama. Every time we put one on we want it to be a pantomime, over the top and a bit of an occasion. But even with the elaborate décor, projections and sound systems, the CORE of COR is the music. Pure, unadulterated, underground disco, house and balearia, all served up by the 7 COR ressies.

We are so very lucky at COR to have such a tight crew at the centre of The Civilisation Of the Rough. Every single member of the COR fam have a deep seeded love for disco and understand it’s influence on the other music we love.

Free COR badge with every order!

But even though we all share this love of disco, we all have our own takes on how and what we play. From the old to the new, the upfront to the dubby, from the housey to the Balearic, there a 7 different DJs who each have their own take on disco that completely complements the rest of the group. Perhaps this is why the COR parties have been so popular? Who knows.

Anyway, although the COR parties only take place once in a while, the COR ressies are always up to something else in and around Southsea town and beyond.

Just this weekend our disco ambassador Matt Seeney was working his disco magic on a side project ‘Unicorn Dream presents Sparklehouse’ at The Hobby Horse in London.  He can also be found on a regular basis spinning discs at the Brick Lane fav The Big Chill Bar.

Page 2 of 2The weekend before last, our COR disco vets Big Mick Hood and the south coast ledge Steve Laming were hosting yet another of their wonderful Mirrorball soirées across the water in Gosport. Keep your ears pricked for more Mirrorball coming back to Southsea village for bank hol blow out too.

As if Mick doesn’t get enough of a work out on Mirrorball duty, he has been invited personally by Greg Wilson to play at the wonderful Vintage Festival at Goodwood in a couple of weeks time, Sat 14th Aug. What an honor, and testament to the quality to this disco vets skills, not to mention his gargantuan collection of original disco pressings.cor_bus_crop

Along side Mirrorball, Steve is also busy with the occasional visit up down London town to spin some of his finest cuts at ‘The Soul Night Out’ with old funk brother Owen Wasington.

Leon Windsor, our resident Balearic aficionado is spending a lot of time in the studio of late. If he’s not creating or remixing aural deliciousness under his Ladysmith or Hush Money guises (check the COR album coming very soon!) he’s working relentlessly with old production chum Triggs on their latest and greatest projects.

Another studio project taking shape at the mo is a collaboration between disco vet Steve Laming and COR gob Mark Persaud. Rumour has it they will be returning to the studio imminently to add the finishing touches to their first track, a chuggy disco floor burner they are just itching to air.

dada_smallMark (under the guise of ‘Who is Dave Balard?’) is also tied up at the moment with COR stable mate Rosko Siffredi in putting the finishing touches to their new club night foray away from COR, ‘The Carbaret Voltaire’, which brings their love of all things house and disco colliding head first to produce deep, dubby, disco et house vibe on a monthly basis.

So, as you can see, lots going on with the COR boys over and above the wonderful COR parties themselves.

If you love COR and you love the music, keep you eye on what else is coming out of the COR stable and get involved. You don’t have to wait until the next COR party to get your underground disco fix.

Sign up on the COR site http://C-O-R.CO.UK to be kept up to date on all things disco, not just from COR, but from all the COR Fam are up to and more.
